| Dan Horn Presents Wallace & Ladmo - www.danhorn.comTitle: Suitcase SwitcherooDescription: Dan & Orson attempt a magic illusion.Date: 1981Comments:As I go back and look at these old tapes again, I realize how indulgent Wallace really was of me. As a magic trick, this bit is not very convincing. But the influence on me of the Wallace & Ladmo spirit is quite apparent in its somewhat tragic outcome. | The Ventriloquist Contest | |
| Dan Horn Presents Wallace & Ladmo - www.danhorn.comTitle: The Ventriloquist ContestDescription: Ladmo and Dan face-off in a duel of dummies. Date: 1982Comments:It was Wallaces idea to pit Ladmo & Spunky (a mock vent act originating early in the shows history) against Orson and me. Wallace wrote the bits and the gag became the theme that ran through that days taping. Pat maintains his wooden persona in true puppet fashion and Ladmo's ventriloquial skills (when Ladmo and Spunkys lines overlap) are summed up by Wall's off-camera comment, Amazing! Spunky's Elephant Man reference at the end of the skit is a call-back to a bit with Craig Dingle just before this sketch. Its quite evident here that my inexperience using the teleprompter spoils what could have been an amusing bit. The thing I find interesting is: how come I stumble several times over lines—but Orson doesnt? I guess he was just better at reading the prompter than me. This bit also shows how Wallace could really be cheeky—he wrote the word zipper into the script no fewer than three times! Just try saying zipper without moving your lips. | Polly's Movie | |
| Dan Horn Presents Wallace & Ladmo - www.danhorn.com - Title: Pollys MovieDescription: A winner on the set steals the show from Dan & Polly. Date: 1981Comments:The subject of "occupant restraints" isn't that interesting, so, often I wrote bits where the dialogue really had nothing to do with the message outside of ending with a reminder to wear seat belts. This isnt a particularly well written or performed bit, but I love this clip for the charming little Ladmo Bag winner seated next to me. When she saw Polly on the off camera monitor she had to let everyone know, "Thats her!" | Christmas Poetry Contest | |
| Wallace & Ladmo Featured Clip of the Month from the personal video collection of Dan Horn Title: The Christmas Poetry Contest Description: Ladmo and Gerald face-off with holiday poems. Date: 1982 Comments: By December 1982, Wallace began working me into the show a little more, and in this clip, I actually take Wallace’s usual role in The Christmas Poetry Contest between Ladmo and Gerald. Stepping in for Wallace actually made me feel quite ill at ease—which is clearly evident in the bit from my somewhat garbled diction in a few spots. I also didn’t know what to do with my hands without a puppet to operate so they often ended up in my pockets. After almost 2 years appearing on the show (in the clip Gerald still refers to me as “the new guy”), I still felt a little intimidated working with the guys I grew up watching. However, Ladmo and Gerald more than made up for my shortcomings. Cheers! | Marshall Good Takes a Dive | |
| Description: Marshall Good leaps off a building after a sandwich. Date: 1982 This bit (written, I believe, by Craig Dingle—although he says he doesn’t remember it) follows an appearance on the show by some juggling circus clowns. It’s a fun little piece where once again Marshall Good liberates five dollars from easy mark, Ladmo. I wonder how much it would amount to if we added up all the cash mooched by Marshall Good over the entire course of the show. It would probably be substantial as his frequent attempts were often successful. There was one time in particular, however, when all he got for his efforts was the bum’s rush. When I was a kid, my best friend was made a joke winner and I accompanied him to the station then located in the old Westward Ho building on Central in Phoenix. Even though I wasn’t a winner, I got to join my buddy on the set as he received his Ladmo Bag. Marshall Good entered to do a bit with Wall and before leaving, tried to get me to lend him five bucks. Ever since, guilt has plagued my mind as I’ve often wondered if a bill from me then could have been the impetus for turning his life around. Probably not, but it’s tough to ignore that nagging, “what if… Dan Horn (c)2008 |
